Design process

The church’s artistic design is based on ideas by Goldstein artists Andreas Skorupa, Julius Bockelt, Markus Schmitz, Birgit Ziegert, Stefan Häfner, Julia Krause-Harder and Franz von Saalfeld. In both formal and functional terms the design focuses on the basic elements of the liturgy such as the cross, the altar, the windows, the niche dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the floor.

The design concept was devised between 2012 and 2015 over a series of phases. The idea of having Marienkirche designed by disabled artists called for new forms of collaboration between artists with and without disabilities. In the first phase, the theological programme was developed, with Bishop emeritus Franz Kamphaus at the helm. Taking this as their starting point, a core team of Goldstein artists and their assistants came up with the design concept for the church. The numerous ideas developed were then implemented by artists from Atelier Goldstein and by renowned companies specializing in glass art, metal design and sculpture.

The Marienkirche’s new look gives the symbolism behind the Christian faith a tangible feel. The Goldstein artists’ own personal pictorial approaches combine with the church itself and its liturgical elements in a way that is quite manifest in the properties of the materials used.
